Taking Refuge in the Buddha
Maintaining mindful awareness is equivalent to reciting the Buddha’s name
Author Shi Faliang (Article extracted from the publication “A Splendid Turn”)
An old lady was plagued with sickness due to old age. Her family members urged her to take refuge in the Buddha and recite the Buddha’s name for protection.
She did as she was told but her health did not improve after a year. Two years had passed, and she was still her same old self.
Now, the old lady has stopped reciting the Buddha’s name. Whenever she was asked about it, she would reply that it was a waste of time as doing so did not result in the Buddha blessing her health.
What is the meaning of taking refuge in the Buddha?
Buddha is awareness. Taking refuge is returning to and relying on something. Taking refuge in the Buddha means returning to and relying on our awareness.
What is the meaning of reciting the Buddha’s name?
Focus on the present and return to our immovable mind. This way, maintaining mindful awareness is equivalent to reciting the Buddha’s name, as Buddha is awareness.
Only through this method of reciting the Buddha’s name can we meet up with the real Buddha. Otherwise, we might just end up blaming Buddha for being biased, unfair and uncompassionate.
“Amitabha…” Do not blame the Buddha. He has nothing to do with all that’s happening.
