The Diamond Sutra is one of the most treasured sutras in Buddhism. Our inherent prajna wisdom, like a diamond, can cut away all dualistic thoughts, free us from delusions and attachments, and bring us to the shore of enlightenment. Many Buddhists chant this sutra as a daily practice. Through studying the sutra and contemplating on its meaning, we will eventually uncover the prajna wisdom to realize true reality.
The Universal Door of Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva is a doctrine appeared at chapter twenty-five in “Lotus Sutra”. It introduces the great compassionate Bodhisattva Guanyin and explains how Guanyin can appear in various forms to assist in saving sentient beings, protecting them from dangers, and liberating them from suffering.
Through this short but explicit doctrine, Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva introduces a universal Dharma for everyone, which is recitation of his name. Similar to Buddha’s name chanting, this method is simple and accessible to even the illiterate. However, to establish a solid resonance with Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva, development of concentration and faith are a lifetime lesson.
Why did the Buddha give a discourse on precept taking to his lay disciples?
When the lay disciples see the simple, peaceful and carefree lifestyle of the Sangha, they aspire to live like them. They approached the Buddha and seek his guidance on leading such a carefree life.
The Buddha introduced the concept of taking the eight precepts for one day. Why did the Buddha suggest this? Because of the short duration, it is easier to practice and such practice has many benefits.
